Everyday tennis enthusiasts are getting an opportunity to earn a seven-figure prize when they take on tennis' top professionals - headed by top-ranked the Spanish champion - in a single-point showdown leading up to the Australian Grand Slam

Organizers of the year's first Grand Slam have unveiled the Seven-Figure Quick-Fire Competition, which will match everyday competitors against elite athletes in a knockout tournament at Melbourne Park

How the Event Will Work

Players will play 'the classic hand game' to establish who takes the serve or return position, and the player who wins the point will progress to the next round

The winner of the event will receive approximately half a million pounds

For comparison, players who reached the final four of the main draw competitions in the 2025 Australian Open won A$1.1m

Previous Similar Events

The American Grand Slam staged a revamped, separate mixed doubles tournament in the eighth month which motivated top singles players to participate, with the winners receiving $1m

The Australian Open held its inaugural One Point Slam in the current season, but the cash prize was A$60,000 and it generated little publicity

The Russian player was the single high-ranked athlete involved, and his run came to an end when he put the sole serving chance allowed failing to clear the net in his quarter-final

Event Details

Organizers have not detailed exactly how the event will function, but it is anticipated to mirror a similar format to the most recent iteration

The elite players will be permitted to have a single serve and the non-professionals on two occasions - as is the standard practice in traditional tennis

While it is unclear how the bracket will work, there will be five knockout rounds and the venue will be the main stadium rather than the smaller Kia Arena

The concluding rounds will occur in a evening slot instead of early afternoon

Entry Requirements

Any Australians - or overseas competitors who have enrolled with the national federation - can enter 'quick-match event' tournaments at their local tennis clubs

The victors of the local competitions will then go into a draw, with an everyday competitor from every geographic division picked to participate in the 'grand finale' in a nighttime event on Wednesday, 14 January

There will also be a qualifying draw in December which everyday players, aspiring competitors, celebrities and athletic celebrities can enter

It begins on early January and the successful competitors will go into the following day's 'final showdown' with the additional everyday players and 10 professionals

"Whether you're an amateur or a pro, the ultimate winner will walk away with the award. Applications will start imminently at venues throughout the nation"

Event organizers mentioned there were "more big names to be revealed shortly", while the event portal said "famous personalities" would be taking part
