Made beginnings in both innings. His dismissal during the match was when things started to unravel for the English side.

Appears improved for technical tweaks. The first Test in the series tends to be his best, after which his form dips. The team require him to build on this.

Joe Root – One

Miles away from that first hundred in Australia. The side require the wisdom of their best player to have any chance to bounce back from this defeat.

Brook – 5

His half-century in the first innings was lively, but valuable. Awful choice in the follow-on.

Ben Stokes – Six

Came back from injury with a five-for, though appeared out of touch with the bat. Lost control in the field in the face of Head's aggressive batting.

Smith – Four

Might possess the game for Australia, yet must to improve. Can expect plenty of short bowling from now on.

Gus Atkinson – 5

Part of the strong England first-innings bowling performance and attempted to carry the fight with the bat in the second innings. Among the attack that fell apart during the match.

Carse – Five

Comparable to the previous, with added mustard of getting dominated by Travis Head.

Archer – 5

Appeared impressive while bowling in the first innings and proved the top among struggling teammates in the second. Might yet play a key role on the series.

Mark Wood – Five

Debutant was unlucky to be exposed to Jofra Archer in the first innings, later contributed in the sensational pursuit of runs.

Khawaja – Three

A bizarre match. Did not look fully fit and had time off the field. Held on to a couple of key catches at slip, yet also looked slow in the field. Earns a point due to his injury that allowed Head to open.

Labuschagne – Seven

A successful return to the side. Absorbed the English bowling pressure better than others in the first innings, then backed up Head later.

Smith – Five

Looked out of sorts early on. Needless before the game attack on Monty Panesar.

Travis Head – Nine

Perhaps unfair not to get the full 10, however he attempted a pretty poor stroke in the first innings. His follow-on century proved to be an historic innings.

Green – Five

Claimed the key dismissal of Pope in the first innings. Shaken by one Mark Wood short ball when he batted. Hardly needed later in the match.

Alex Carey – 5

Attempted an aggressive response against England's bowlers early in the match. Neat behind the stumps.

Starc – Nine

Carried the burden of the bowling in the absence of Pat Cummins and Hazlewood with the first Aussie Ashes series 10-wicket haul in 20 years.

Scott Boland – 6

Short of top form initially. Improved in the second to spark the England collapse.

Doggett – Six

Solid debut. More than capable replacement for Cummins and Hazlewood.

Lyon – 2

Virtually an onlooker during a game controlled by pace. Maybe suffered a knock after being hit by Mark Wood.
