Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture at Spectators

The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he claims was an “unintentional” offensive hand signal directed at attendees during a recent game at the Jets’ stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“That was regrettable. That was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”

He further emphasized that the signal was entirely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the wrong digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”

League Context for Owner Fines

This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Recent examples involve:

  • Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
  • Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.

Jones, who is known for his media savvy, possesses an estimated net worth of around $16bn, so the fine manageable for the wealthy proprietor.

Offseason Controversies and Public Attention

This event comes after a controversial preseason for Jones, who faced significant backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team traded key pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a Netflix documentary that explored his influence in building the Dallas franchise into the globe’s most valuable sports franchise, even with its recent championship drought.

The league’s decision to fine Jones highlights its ongoing initiative to uphold professional conduct among all team officials, regardless of their status or financial standing.
