Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments
NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, responding to latest criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
Wilson's remarks directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate issue from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the Saints.
During that period, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded team members for delivering hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.
The Cause of the Recent Dispute
The quarterback's reaction came after Payton made comments following the Broncos' historic 33-32 victory over the Giants. The coach suggested that the Giants had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Moreover, Payton implied that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson over Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.
Background of the Wilson-Payton Partnership
- The quarterback joined the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245 million contract.
- The Broncos went 4-11 in his debut year before Denver hired Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a stint in TV commentary.

If Wilson remained on the roster by March 2024, his $37M pay for the following year would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, ending the contentious breakup between the player and his mentor.
