New York Launches Online Platform for Public to Submit ICE Videos Following Arrests of Four American Citizens
New York state AG has launched a new digital platform urging locals to share photos and videos of ICE operations around the state. This step comes just a day after a high-profile enforcement action disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking large-scale outcry.
American Citizens Held In Raid
A US congressman revealed during a news conference that four citizens were arrested and detained for "about 24 hours" after Tuesday's raid. Demonstrations occurred in NYC on consecutive evenings.
"Every New Yorker has the right to exist without intimidation," the AG wrote in a statement.
"If you witnessed and recorded federal operations during the raid, I urge you to provide that footage with us. We are dedicated to assessing these reports and evaluating any legal breaches."
Form Details
The portal offers options to send photos and videos of the raid, along with a field to note location information. Before submitting, individuals must tick a box that confirms that "the attorney general may use any materials, images, or footage in a public document, such as in a legal proceeding or public report."
Information about the Chinatown Raid
The Manhattan operation, which witnesses say featured dozens of ICE personnel, happened in a popular district of the city where counterfeit products and merchandise are regularly available en masse – typically to sightseers.
Footage of Tuesday's raid reveal multiple masked and armed federal agents restraining and arresting a individual, and forcing aside witnesses. Masses of residents followed the personnel down the sidewalks. An military-style transport was noticed moving along the city streets.
Political Response
In a Wednesday press conference featuring the rights organization, the congressman, a Democratic representative, stated that four American citizens were taken by federal agents for almost a full day and that there were "no situations where nationals should be arrested for unjustly." He noted the persons were let go on Wednesday with no accusations made.
"The goal is evident here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," the congressman remarked. "This is a militarized effort to provoke unrest. It is merely a justification to incite violence for the government to bring in the military to halt conflict that they have created."
Widespread Condemnation
Fury over the immigration operation quickly spread – all three NYC mayor hopefuls criticized the incident, as did Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Yet again, the Trump administration chooses authoritarian theatrics that instill panic, instead of protection. It must stop," one mayoral candidate wrote.
New York City community groups voiced concern as well.
"ICE targeted the neighborhood with armored transports, hooded officers and tactical gear to target small merchants attempting to earn income. This operation had nothing to do with public safety and focused completely on intimidating residents and neighborhoods," stated the leader of a major immigrant coalition.
ICE Policies
Agency rules forbids the detention of US citizens and the bureau has stated it will not take into custody US citizens. Nevertheless, external research has discovered that numerous US citizens have been taken illegally by ICE since the beginning of the current administration.
Current Situation
Immigration operations have been becoming more common in the state and nationwide recently.
A mid-October raid in central NYC was the earliest reported action on an refuge facility of the current administration. Rallies opposing ICE are commonplace including accusations of violence and inhumane treatment.
Most recently, a document provided by legal entities stated healthcare failures of expectant mothers in government custody.
