A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.
The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
