Prison Surprise: Brazil's Ex-President Bolsonaro Confronts Life Behind Bars

He battled the law and the law won.

A couple of months subsequent to getting a twenty-seven-year sentence for attempting to “destroy” the nation's political system, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro finally seems headed to prison.

Anticipated Incarceration

The found-guilty instigator – who had been subject to home confinement in his residence while a set of judicial steps and challenges play out – is broadly anticipated to be incarcerated in the next few days, during increasing talk that he will be transferred to a notorious high-security penitentiary.

Historical Comments on Convicts

Over Bolsonaro’s four-decade time in politics, the conservative ex- paratrooper showed scant mercy for the country's inmates.

“For what reason must we provide those lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They should just get screwed, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”

At another time, Bolsonaro declared: “Unless you desire to finish behind bars, the only thing required is not sexual assault, abduction or theft.”

Incarceration Location Speculation

However the prospect of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison top-security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, several of whom this week visited the complex in an apparent effort to discourage the supreme court from transferring him there.

The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was one of the visitors, claimed he anticipated the 70-year-old politician to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and was concerned his location could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s serious intestinal ailments – the consequence of a near-fatal knife attack during the last political campaign – implied it would be hazardous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His health is highly critical. He cannot to manage if they move him to Papuda … It would be dreadful,” said the senator, who also voiced anxiety about overcrowded cells and the quality of prison meals.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas noted observing cells containing forty detainees: “It's almost one square meter per prisoner.

“We spoke to the prisoners and they complain, of course, of the terrible food,” remarked the senator.

Backers React

Lucas is not the only voice expressing views prior to the ex-leader's anticipated detention.

Penning in a prominent daily, another ally, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “severe” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” political career and asserted Brazil was about to experience “the greatest unfairness in its record”.

“It represents an injustice that erodes the spirits of countless Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Varied Popular Response

This could be correct considering the considerable support Bolsonaro holds on the right-wing. But his expected incarceration has also gladdened the feelings of millions individuals who feel he deserves to be incarcerated for planning to block his successor from becoming president – and even plotting to have him killed.

Congressman Otoni, a congressman for the sitting president's Workers’ party, stated: “Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in segregation. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We wish him to get dignified handling – but dignified care behind bars. He cannot carry on being his own prison warden for his entire life.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro allies, who have long praising the severe handling of convicts, had suddenly woken up to their rights. “Just now has the far-right – which has repeatedly argued that human rights are not for offenders – chosen to inspect a jail to discover what circumstances are actually like,” he stated.

“The former president is a criminal,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he earned “shameful, demeaning treatment”.

Possible Jail Conditions

Regardless of speculation that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which currently holds about 14,000 inmates, his expected location appears to be a nearby penitentiary for police officers and other “special” detainees known as Papudinha (Small Papuda).

Its cells are considerably more comfortable than those in the main prison, although nevertheless a distant from the luxury Bolsonaro had while living in the stunning official residence, approximately 12 miles away.

As per reports, the accommodation Bolsonaro could expect to occupy in Papudinha is about 24 square meters – about the size of a couple of car spots – and contains a 12 square meter restroom with a bathing area and a 12 square meter veranda. “He could be authorized to have a TV and also a cooler in his cell as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” information suggested.

Ideological Reactions

Senator Lucas condemned the rumoured idea to send the former leader to Papuda as “a type of payback” on the part of the presiding magistrate who led Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will decide his outcome in the {
