Rory McIlroy hails Spoty victory with individual and team accolades.

Moments before the announcement, a nervous worry flashed through the golfer's mind. He said he was concerned, "Not a racing champion once more."

"It's been a tremendous night for golf," the champion said. "The sport was celebrated in such a big way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a huge moment for golf, and hopefully we can build upon that."

On this occasion, however, there was no dramatic upset. The outcome was clear, allowing a thrilled McIlroy to savor a blockbuster evening for both himself and the continental winners, who were honored as team of the year.

Constant Motion

But rather than attend the post-ceremony celebrations, McIlroy was already plotting his upcoming event. Having just played in the Golf Channel Games in Florida and flown to the UK, he was flying right back to the sunshine state.

"It's been a hectic 24 hours," McIlroy explained. "I'm looking forward to a little bit of rest over Christmas."

Unfinished Business

That said, McIlroy made clear he has no intention to become complacent, despite achieving the career grand slam earlier in the year. "I still feel I've got a more to give in me," he remarked.

"Additional major championships, order of merit titles, international events, that's the aim. But if you feel like you can keep progressing and have the hunger, that's the key."

Team Triumph

Elsewhere, Ryder Cup partner Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to collect the collective trophy, also praised golf's remarkable night and his close friend's award.

"They are the memories that will stay with us indefinitely so to get the people's vote for that is truly special," Fleetwood said. "Seeing Rory pick that up, I think he deserves it so much."

When reminded that McIlroy was only the third in his sport to win the award in its 71-year history, Fleetwood grinned before joking, "Not a very popular bunch are we!"

Next Targets

Fleetwood hopes to secure his initial major championship next year but he acknowledged McIlroy still desires more success. "As long as you want to be the best you can be, and you're still driven, you'll find things to work on," Fleetwood explained.

Football Loyalty

Before McIlroy left, one final question came up. A devoted Manchester United fan, he has been invited to show his trophies at Old Trafford before. So could he be tempted to do it again after his recent triumphs?

"Provided that they halt the flow of multiple scores in Manchester," he replied with a laugh. "There is progress. There's a touch of positivity around."

After a truly spectacular season, it's little surprise that he is seeing the bright side.
