The Details Known About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
No fewer than 16 individuals perished and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police are describing as a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, officials have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were taken to medical facilities.
The deceased have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the individuals who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the moments before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
