The English Team to Begin UEFA Euro 2028 Campaign at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium

The English squad will initiate their 2028 European Championship adventure at the the home of Manchester City, provided that they achieve the expected entry for a championship staged throughout the bulk of Britain and the Republic of Ireland.

Manchester City’s home ground has not hosted an England men’s fixture since eight years ago, when Turkey were overcome 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is almost certain to welcome the England side for their first match on a Saturday in June 2028.

The English side are set to play their last two group stage games at Wembley Stadium, but, should they win Group B, their knockout stage opener would take place at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Securing the runner-up spot would mean beginning the playoffs at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Tournament Opening and Protest

The championship was inaugurated at an gathering in central London on the previous evening. Key representatives from Uefa and the host FAs were barracked as they arrived the venue by approximately 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who demanded Israel’s national side to be kicked out from global football because of the conflict in Gaza.

Banners were raised with slogans stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists shouted: “Kick Israel out.”

Championship Schedule

The opening game of the tournament will be played at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on Friday 9 June, a fixture that will include the Dragons if they qualify.

Wembley will host the two semi-final matches and the championship match, which will be held on a Sunday in July 2028 with a commencement at 5:00 PM.

It is hoped that an earlier kick-off, which will also be adopted for UEFA Champions League finals from the following campaign, will appeal to families and help engage a broader range of audiences.

Qualifying Teams

The Republic of Ireland are set to play their opening match at the Dublin stadium and the Scottish team would do the same at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.

Each host nation’s squad will enter the qualifying tournament; two guaranteed slots will be set aside for any that fail to qualify for the finals through the qualification path.

Locations and Elimination Phase

Villa Park and Spurs’ ground finalize the nine host stadiums. Every stadium will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarter-finals played at the national stadium of each host.

The draw for the qualifiers will be staged in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a venue city last year when it emerged Casement Park could not be redeveloped in time, on 6 December 2026.

Official Statement

“It will be a competition for the supporters and a celebration of everything we value about the football – its emotion and ability to unite individuals.”

In excess of three million admissions, a record for a UEFA European Championship, are projected to be released to attendees.
