The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.

A freshly coined term came to light a couple of months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Child casualty without any family left”. This term is specific to Gaza, as stated by medical experts such as paediatricians. Normally, it is uncommon for medical staff to treat a minor who has been bereaved of their whole family. But, there has been no semblance of normality about the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of young amputees exceeds that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy about many doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.

A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and international watchdogs contend that genocidal acts are continuing. The Israeli government disputes these claims, just as it disavows everything it is implicated in. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its declared purpose of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, although several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, it seems, is what international harmony looks like.

Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems completely different.

A Double Standard

Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

The contest marks seven decades next year – almost double the current lifespan of someone in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A competition that once promoted harmony has now become a cynical way to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
