The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track

This latest animated series, the newest animated series from Critical Role, unveiled a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for characters such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.

Overall, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.

This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the official score of that title, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when cast member the performer added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its mood is a little off.

Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
