The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Utter Faith' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an teenage makes club history in a pivotal European match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.
In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions claimed a 3-0 last-16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek return to confirm a last eight place.
At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica
This talent is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.
He signed for Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.
Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in January.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he brought to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'
In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the senior squad and gave him minutes during the warm-up matches.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his development as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I started playing the game, each day you head to training and every day you play a match," stated Pitarch following his first appearance.
"I've just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."
Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.
Pitarch has seized it with performances that have belied his youth and inexperience.
"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly dynamic, with great endurance, work-rate and mobility."
The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.
"His greatest quality is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I realize fans might be surprised to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to perform his normal game.
"He will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It is delightful to have a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining Real Madrid's famous youth academy.
He holds both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the choice to represent both nations at senior international level.
Under international regulations, players may represent multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a official full international.
He has played for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.
In a recent interview, the player said: "I haven't made my final decision yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion soon."
His situation echoes that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine chose La Roja, Brahim opted to play for the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one win at City, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight tie with the German champions.
He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club chase trophies to come.
After his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he commented after the win at Etihad Stadium.
