A comprehensive rescue and recovery effort is currently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a duo of lost sailing vessels carrying aid cargo journeying from Mexico to Cuba.

Military Rescue Operations Launched

Mexico has dispatched naval teams and search planes to find the two vessels, which were transporting no fewer than nine personnel, per a navy statement.

The boats had been expected to make landfall in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no official word of their docking, authorities reported.

Context of Humanitarian Support to Cuba

The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on Mexico's over the past few weeks, as the country grapples with multiple power outages across the country.

"Both crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and each boat are fitted with proper navigational gear and signalling equipment," an official for the convoy commented.

The nine crew members are citizens of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their embassy officials.

"Our team is co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.

Recent Humanitarian Mission

Previously that week, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare another boat that had carried 14 tonnes of donated goods to the nation.

That boat, dubbed "Granma 2.0" in reference to the boat in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, drugs, baby formula, cycles and provisions.

Larger International Climate

Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led attempts to deliver critical assistance to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation began.

The United Nations have since raised alarms about ""severe" supply shortages, with more than fifty thousand surgeries called off in Cuba amid power shortages.

Foreign policy tensions have increased in recent months, with comments from various representatives highlighting the complicated state of diplomatic ties.

In response to certain statements, a prominent government figure stated firmly that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Accounts suggest that early stages of discussions had begun, although their current progress remains not publicly known.

The Mexican navy said it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its disposal to discover the vessels and guarantee the safety of the people on board.

At this time, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
