As part of a joint military effort, aircraft from Britain and France have targeted an underground complex in central Syria previously used by the Islamic State group.

Particulars of the Combined Operation

The mission occurred on the evening of Saturday in a hilly terrain near the ancient city of Palmyra.

Laser-guided bombs were used to target and destroy the underground passages leading to the facility.

“Preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully,” announced a defence ministry release.

Forces Deployed

Typhoon FGR4 warplanes executed the airstrike, with the assistance of a Voyager fuel tanker to allow for longer missions.

Suspected Use of the Site

This below-ground structure is assessed as having been utilized as the stockpiling of arms and munitions.

Officials stated the vicinity was free from non-combatants at the point of impact.

Political and Military Resolve

The Defence Secretary emphasized the country's resolve to “stand shoulder to shoulder with key allies” in order to prevent any resurgence” of Islamic State.

Thanks were offered to the military members conducting the operation, which aimed to remove violent extremists who endanger our safety.”

Broader Context

Coalition warplanes have been conducting aerial patrols over parts of the region to deter a potential resurgence of the extremist organization that previously ruled large areas in the country until 2019.
